Dit is een hoofdstuk uit het boek ''e-Youth: Balancing Between Opportunities and Risks' van M. Walgrave, W. Heirman, S. Mels, C. Timmerman & H. Vandenbosch.
De alomtegenwoordigheid van ICT in de moderne huishoudens heeft kinderen en adolescenten voorzien van tal van mogelijkheden op vlak van onderwijs, plezier en contact. Deze jonge leeftijdsgroep wordt echter in toenemende mate geconfronteerd met een scala aan online risico's met betrekking tot persoonlijk contact en ongepaste inhoud. Deze dualiteit was de rode draad van een internationale multidisciplinaire conferentie waarvan dit boek enkele uitstekende artikels selecteert.
Na de lezer een typologie van de voordelen van en bedreigingen die voortkomen uit het gebruik van internet te verstrekken, gaat het boek in op de kwestie van de online toegang en de mate waarin de jongeren ICT gebruiken in hun dagelijkse leven. De auteurs brengen ook de mogelijkheden van jongeren in kaart op vlak van het gebruik en het produceren van online content, evenals de enorme contact mogelijkheden van sociale netwerk sites. Naast deze mogelijkheden, worden risico's, zoals cyberpesten ook onderzocht. Het laatste deel van het boek is gewijd aan de empowerment van jongeren en bescherming. De rol van ouders, scholen en overheden worden onderzocht in het kader van het toestaan van jongeren om hun voordelen te maximaliseren en de risico's van het internet te beperken.

This is a chapter of the book 'e-Youth: Balancing Between Opportunities and Risks' by M. Walgrave, W. Heirman, S. Mels, C. Timmerman & H. Vandenbosch.
The omnipresence of ICT in modern households has provided children and adolescents with plenty of opportunities for education, entertainment and contact. This young age group, however, is increasingly confronted with a range of online risks relating to personal contact and inappropriate content. This duality was the central thread of an international multidisciplinary conference from which this book presents a selection of excellent papers.
After providing the reader with a typology of the benefits of and threats arising from young people’s internet use, the book elaborates on the issue of online access and the extent to which the young use ICT in their daily lives. The authors also consider the opportunities young people now have to use and produce online content, as well as the tremendous contact opportunities offered by social network sites. Alongside these opportunities, risks such as cyberbullying are examined too. The final part of the book is devoted to young people’s empowerment and protection. The roles of parents, schools and governments are scrutinized in the context of allowing young people to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of the internet. |
