De alomtegenwoordigheid van ICT in de moderne huishoudens heeft kinderen en adolescenten voorzien van tal van mogelijkheden op vlak van onderwijs, plezier en contact. Deze jonge leeftijdsgroep wordt echter in toenemende mate geconfronteerd met een scala aan online risico's met betrekking tot persoonlijk contact en ongepaste inhoud. Deze dualiteit was de rode draad van een internationale multidisciplinaire conferentie waarvan dit boek enkele uitstekende artikels selecteert.
Na de lezer een typologie van de voordelen van en bedreigingen die voortkomen uit het gebruik van internet te verstrekken, gaat het boek in op de kwestie van de online toegang en de mate waarin de jongeren ICT gebruiken in hun dagelijkse leven. De auteurs brengen ook de mogelijkheden van jongeren in kaart op vlak van het gebruik en het produceren van online content, evenals de enorme contact mogelijkheden van sociale netwerk sites. Naast deze mogelijkheden, worden risico's, zoals cyberpesten ook onderzocht. Het laatste deel van het boek is gewijd aan de empowerment van jongeren en bescherming. De rol van ouders, scholen en overheden worden onderzocht in het kader van het toestaan van jongeren om hun voordelen te maximaliseren en de risico's van het internet te beperken.

The omnipresence of ICT in modern households has provided children and adolescents with plenty of opportunities for education, entertainment and contact. This young age group, however, is increasingly confronted with a range of online risks relating to personal contact and inappropriate content. This duality was the central thread of an international multidisciplinary conference from which this book presents a selection of excellent papers.
After providing the reader with a typology of the benefits of and threats arising from young people’s internet use, the book elaborates on the issue of online access and the extent to which the young use ICT in their daily lives. The authors also consider the opportunities young people now have to use and produce online content, as well as the tremendous contact opportunities offered by social network sites. Alongside these opportunities, risks such as cyberbullying are examined too. The final part of the book is devoted to young people’s empowerment and protection. The roles of parents, schools and governments are scrutinized in the context of allowing young people to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of the internet.

Samenvatting: Het doel van het ‘AMiCA’ project is bijdragen aan de online veiligheid van jongeren (12-18 jaar) door middel van de ontwikkeling van een systeem voor automatische herkenning (via beeld- en tekstanalyse) van bedreigende situaties op sociale netwerksites. De focus ligt op de detectie van drie specifieke situaties, namelijk: (1) cyberpesten, (2) seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag en (3) automutilatie en suïcidaal gedrag. Voor de ontwikkeling van de ‘AMiCA’ monitor wordt er rekening gehouden met attitudes, behoeften en verwachtingen van relevante stakeholders.
Summary: The ‘AMiCA’ project aims to contribute to the online safety of adolescents (12-18 years old) through the development of an automatic data-monitoring system to detect threats on social network sites, using image- and text analysis. The focus lies on three specific situations, including (1) cyber bullying, (2) transgressive sexual behaviour and (3) self-mutilation and suicidal behaviour. In the development of the AMiCA monitor attitudes, needs and experiences of relevant stakeholders are taken into account.

Samenvatting: Dit artikel neemt een mensenrechtelijke benadering aan ten opzichte van het analyseren van het fenomeen pesten op school en specificeert welke internationale mensenrechteninstrumenten kunnen worden toegepast op dit gewelddadige probleem. Vervolgens bespreekt het artikel een discussie van een groep die het slachtoffer waren van pesten, waarbij de focus gelegd wordt op pesten dat zijn basis vindt in homofobie, gender en xenofobie, en pesten dat gelinkt wordt aan onderwijsbehoeften (beperkingen) en de socio-economische status. Het tweede onderdeel van het artikel presenteert de beginselen die aan de basis liggen van de interventies tegen pesten door een perspectief van mensenrechten. Anti-pest interventies worden geanalyseerd, samen met de noodzakelijke curriculaire overwegingen, inclusief pedagogie, didactische beginselen en evaluaties.
Summary: This article takes a human rights approach to analysing the phenomenon of school bullying and specifies which international human rights instruments are applicable to this violent problem. The article then moves to a discussion of groups targeted by bullying, focusing on homophobic-, gender- and xenophobic-based bullying as well as bullying linked to special educational needs (disabilities) and socioeconomic status. The second part of the article presents the principles behind bullying interventions through a human rights perspective. Anti-bullying interventions are analysed along with the necessary curricular considerations, including pedagogy, didactic principles and evaluation.
