De centrale onderzoeksvraag gaat over de mogelijke positieve en negatieve effecten van geconnecteerd kinderspeelgoed. Meer in het bijzonder onderzoeken we i) de communicatieve en sociale dimensies van speelgoed met een internetverbinding in het dagelijks leven van kinderen en hun gezinnen onderzoeken;
ii) het bedrijfs- en regelgevingsklimaat dat toezicht houdt op speelgoed dat op het internet is aangesloten;
iii) de online discourses rond dit thema;
In this project we study the emerging communication world of the Internet of Toys —including communication in the family context, communication in the media, and communication in the toy industry. Internet-connected toys are currently being used as play and comfort objects across generations. For children, The Internet of Toys, where toys relate one-on-one to children and also connect to other toys, other children and to online databases.
The central research question is about the positive affordances and potential negatives of children’s internet-connected toys by synthesising existing knowledge about (and perceptions of) internet-connected toys, from multiple perspectives. More specifically, we will: i) explore the communicative and social dimensions of internet-connected toys in the everyday lives of children and their families;
ii) critically interrogate the corporate and regulatory environment that oversees internet-connected toys, including the data collection and sharing practices associated with these toys;
iii) track and analyse the publicly available information, and critique the discursive environment in which internet-connected toys are being promoted, appraised and criticised;
iv) investigate toy designers’ attitudes, practices and constraints regarding the development of viable internet-connected toys to support children’s rights to protection and participation in the digital world.
This project is performed in collaboration with Edith Cowan University in Australia, where the main part of the study will be conducted and two universities in the Europe region (Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Italy and University of Sheffield in UK).Startdatum / Start date : januari 2019 Einddatum / End date : december 2019 Output : Van Mechelen, M., Zaman, B., Bleumers, L., & Mariën, I. Media:AlgemeenSamenvatting: Digitale media zijn niet meer weg te denken uit ons dagelijks leven. Summary: This project concerns research into the Laddering method with preschoolers in order to understand preschoolers' user experience with digital media. We can no longer imagine a world without digital media. Digital media are ubiquitous; they have entered the lives of each of us, even those of preschoolers. Nevertheless, preschoolers are still rarely involved in research on their media experiences. It is often believed that these young children are missing the cognitive and social competences as research participants. In this PhD project, a child-friendly and meaningful method is suggested to involve preschoolers directly in research on their digital media experiences. Research on preschoolers' experiences with new digital products should follow a three-phase, mixed-method approach. In each phase, different research methods are applied. The first phase concerns an exploration phase, during which the preschooler is observed while he is trying out several digital products. In the second phase, the child is asked to express his preferred product. To assess the favourableness of each product, a short, unambiguously questionnaire is administered. In the third and last phase, a laddering interview is conducted. This concerns a special type of in-depth interview during which the respondent is asked several why-questions. It allows revealing the reasons why the child preferred one particular product to the other product(s). The results of several empirical studies with preschoolers show that this multi-method approach allows preschoolers to easily and consistently express their product preference. Moreover, from the age of five years onwards, these young children have sufficient cognitive and verbal qualities to understand and explain the consequences of certain product characteristics. Finally, results also reveal that product (experience) preferences cannot be evaluated by means of smiley-based questionnaires. Preschoolers are inclined to express a similar positive rating to all media experiences. More particularly, their ratings on a smiley scale reflect a pattern of overrepresentation of the happiest faces, irrespective of the actual preference. In contrast, an alternative, nominally scaled questionnaire does provide results that correspond with the young respondents’ preference. In sum, it is concluded that the suggested multi-method approach allows to actively involve preschoolers in research on their experiences and attitudes towards digital media. The methodological approach allows for assessing the success of new products for children or revealing issues for improvements during the product development process. Although often doubts are thrown upon the feasibility of research with preschoolers, this project shows that young children can deliver constructive input in research that is aimed at the development and evaluation of new digital media. Kinderen in kwetsbare situaties:Migratie
Drie onderzoeksvragen staan centraal:
However, due to dislocations family members are increasingly geographically separated and challenged in maintaining high-quality relationships. The current audio-video technologies fail to address physical
interactions appropriately. Therefore, this project aims to research how to enable tangible remote social interactions, by systematically exploring physicality in dislocated intergenerational play. The research project focuses on three main research questions: (1) How can digital and physical materials be combined to add physical experience to current audio-visual remote interactions, (2) How can technologies support
intergenerational social interactions (such as communication, play and meaning-making), and (3) How can rich and new forms of asynchronous tangible play patterns be created that merges the qualities of the physical and digital world? We will advance knowledge on how to support intergenerational play relationships over distance, beyond the current two-dimensional audio-visual technologies, by exploring the hybrid characteristics of remote multi-sensual interactions and creating exemplarily designs of dislocated board games and smart toys. Moreover, we will advance research and design methods to study and design for multi sensual remote play, to address the geographical separation appropriately.
Our methodology is both technology and human-centered. First, the technology-centered perspective is based on material studies to understand
material properties and characteristics and Research through Design to explore materials towards their properties that can be controlled remotely. Second, we will study the richness and heterogeneity of intergenerational interactions through Participatory Design, study how end-users imagine hybrid playful artifacts by means of speculative design, and use narrative methods to assess users’ experiences with technologies through their description of usage situations. re:tangent is a joint research project between PLUS (University of Salzburg) and Mintlab (Meaningful Interactions Lab, KULeuven).Startdatum / Start date : 2018 Einddatum / End date : 2021 Financiering / Funding : FWO Fonds Levenslijn Onderzoeksinstelling / Research institute : KU Leuven Onderzoekstype : Theoriegericht, fundamenteel onderzoek - Doctoraatsonderzoek Methodologische dimensies : Face-to-face/Kwalitatief onderzoek/Internationaal/buitenland/Individuen (direct betrokkenen, kinderen) bestuderen of bevragen/Individuen (direct betrokkenen, volwassenen) bestuderen of bevragen Vaste link: http://www.kekidatabank.be/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3370
