Sociaal werkers hebben de verantwoordelijkheid om de mensenrechten van hun cliënten te beschermen en te verdedigen. Voor individuen en organisaties die betrokken zijn in kinderbescherming en kinderrechten zoals weergegeven in het VN- Verdrag inzake de Rechten van het Kind (IVRK), is het esentieel om te zorgen voor begeleiding. Het IVRK ondersteunt de stelling dat kinderen recht hebben op borstvoeding. Dit betekent dat professionals en autoriteiten die bezig zijn met kinderbescherming de verantwoordelijkheid hebben om te verzekeren dat hun interventies moeders die borstvoeding geven ondersteunen en niet ondermijnen. Bovendien is de impact van het vroegtijdig stopzetten van borstvoeding op verhoogde ongelijkheden in de gezondheid en het risico op het verwaarlozen van kinderen een extra aanbeveling voor interventies binnen kinderbescherming om het continueren van borstvoeding aan te moedigen. Twee case studies worden voorgesteld waarin kinderbeschermingsautoriteiten interactie hadden met een borstvoedende moeder en kind. In de eerste case resulteert de kinderbeschermingsinterventie in het vroeg en permanent ophouden van borstvoeding. In de tweede case wordt er actief gepleit om borstvoeding te continueren. In beide gevallen echter werd de aandrang van de moeder dat borstvoeding belangrijk is voor haar kinderen en moet verder gezet worden, gepathologiseerd. Er worden aanbevelingen gemaakt voor het beleid en voor een opleiding voor kinderbeschermingsautoriteiten om de rechten omtrent borstvoeding voor kinderen te ondersteunen. |

Social workers have a responsibility to protect and uphold the human rights of their clients. For those individuals and organisations involved in child protection, the rights of children, as outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), provide essential guidance. The UNCRC supports the proposition that children have rights in relation to breastfeeding. This means that child protection workers and authorities have a responsibility to ensure that their interventions support and do not undermine mothers in breastfeeding their children. Furthermore, the impact of early cessation of breastfeeding in increasing health inequities and risk of child neglect only adds to the imperative for child protection interventions to support breastfeeding continuance. Two case studies are presented in which child protection authorities had interactions with a breastfeeding mother and child. In the first case, the child protection intervention resulted in the early and permanent cessation of breastfeeding. In the second case, active advocacy allowed breastfeeding to continue. However, in both cases, the mothers' insistence that breastfeeding was important to their children and should continue was pathologised. Recommendations are made for policies and training for child protection authorities to support the breastfeeding rights of children. |
