Dit discours impliceert dat kinderen bij het uiten van hun percepties ondersteund zullen worden door de principes omtrent kinderrechten. Nochtans is dit geen garantie. Bepaalde thema's die het leven van kinderen enorm beïnvloeden, zoals kinderarbeid, worden door kinderen vaak helemaal anders gezien dan in het dominante kinderrechtendiscours. Dit kan toegeschreven worden aan het feit dat de perceptie van kinderen een genuanceerder beeld vormt van hun situatie in tegenstelling tot simplistische tegenstellingen als goed en slecht. Er is dus een duidelijke nood om deze simplistische tegenstellingen te verlaten en in de plaats daarvan de complexiteit van deze kinderen hun leven te vatten. Dit artikel draagt bij tot deze discussie door de percepties van kinderen omtrent lichamelijk straffen in rekening te brengen. Zowel het lichamelijk straffen die ze ervaren door ouders en andere primaire zorgverleners in Ghana als de betekenis die ze zelf aan deze praktijken toekennen. Vervolgens worden de implicaties voor het dominante kinderrechtendiscours onderzocht. De data die in deze paper wordt gepresenteerd is gebaseerd op een project dat één jaar duurde en gesubsidieerd werd door de Nuffield Foundation in de UK. Summary: International children’s rights discourses are centred on the principles of child protection and participation. Underpinning these discourses is the assumption that when children express their views they will support children’s rights principles. However, this is not a guarantee. On key issues affecting their lives such as children’s work and labour, children’s views are often in striking opposition to the dominant children’s rights discourse. This can be attributed to the fact that children’s views show a more nuanced assessment of their situation which challenge simplistic dichotomies about good vs bad. Thus, there is a need to move beyond simple dichotomies and, instead, seek to understand the complexities of children’s lives. This article contributes to this discussion by exploring children’s perceptions of the physical punishment they experience at the hands of parents and other primary caregivers in Ghana and the meanings they themselves attach to the practice. Further, it examines the implications this has for the dominant children’s rights discourse. Data presented in this paper are based on a one-year project funded by the Nuffield Foundation in the UK. Niettemin toont recent onderzoek in oorlogsgebieden dat dagelijkse stressoren (materiële en sociale stressoren die het dagelijkse leven beïnvloeden) een impact kunnen hebben op mentale gezondheidsproblemen die de blootstelling aan extreem gewelddadige gebeurtenissen overstijgt. Het doel van deze studie bestaat er daarom uit onderzoek naar het verband tussen geweld, dagelijkse stressoren en mentale gezondheid van adolescenten in Montevideo, Uruguay, te faciliteren, met het oog op het verzamelen van meer informatie over de verbanden tussen deze drie bij jongeren in gedepriveerde, gewelddadige buurten. De doelstellingen van deze studie zijn meer specifiek de volgende:(1) Nagaan welke gewelddadige gebeurtenissen en dagelijkse stressoren een impact hebben op adolescenten (12 tot 18 jaar oud) die in gedepriveerde buurten in Montevideo wonen, met het oog op het ontwikkelen van een instrument dat op bredere schaal gebruikt kan worden; (2) Aanpassen van twee vaak gebruikte screeningsinstrumenten voor mentale gezondheid (nl. de Impact of Event Scale – Revised en de Hopkins Symptom Checklist 37 for Adolescents) zodat ze vanuit een buurtgerichte invalshoek gebruikt kunnen worden bij gedepriveerde Uruguayaanse jeugd; (3) Exploreren van de psychometrische kwaliteiten van deze instrumenten; en (4) Zoeken naar preliminaire verbanden tussen blootstelling aan geweld, dagelijkse stressoren en mentale gezondheid bij gedepriveerde en middenklasse Uruguyaanse jongeren. Vooreerst worden vragenlijsten ingevuld door professionals (academici, sociaal werkers en onderwijzers) met het oog op taalkundige en inhoudelijke herziening van de items. In de tweede plaats worden de instrumenten bediscussieerd in twee groepen adolescenten (13 en 16 jaar oud) uit een middelbare school in een gedepriveerde buurt, waarbij de formulering van de items aangepast wordt aan hun suggesties. Na deze aanpassingen worden de instrumenten tezamen met de 'Ryff scale for psychosocial wellbeing' (vertaald, aangepast en gevalideerd voor gebruik bij Argentijnse adolescenten, die naar culturele achtergrond sterk overeenkomen met Uruguayaanse adolescenten, door Casullo et al. (2002)) toegepast in twee middelbare scholen. De data die op deze manier verzameld worden, worden ten slotte gebruikt voor factoranalyses, betrouwbaarheidstoetsen en het toetsen van correlaties met psychosociaal welzijn. Summary: While the relationship between exposure to violent events and psychological distress is well-established, the influence of contextual factors in situations of violence has been studied far less. Nonetheless, recent investigations in war-affected areas revealed an important effect of daily stressors (material and social low-impact stressors affecting daily living) on mental health outcomes, beyond the impact of exposure to extreme violent events. The goal of this particular study is to facilitate and execute research on violence, daily stressors and adolescent mental health in Montevideo, Uruguay, eventually aiming to add evidence on the relationship between daily stressors and violence exposure , and their impact on youth’s mental health in peaceful, yet poverty-stricken urban societies, marked by a high prevalence of community violence. More specifically, the aims of this project are fourfold: (1)explore which violent events and daily stressors affect adolescents (12 to 18 years) living in low-income neighborhoods in Montevideo, with the final aim of constructing an instrument for further large-scale research;(2)Adapt two broadly used screening instruments for mental health (Impact of Event Scale – Revised, Hopkins Symptom Checklist 37 for Adolescents) for use in low-income Uruguayan youth using a community-based approach;(3) Explore psychometric properties of the instruments; and (4)Investigate preliminary associations of violent exposure, daily stressors and mental health in Uruguayan low-income vs. middle-income adolescents. Firstly, questionnaires are filled out by professionals (academics, social workers, teachers) for language and content revision of the items, leading to adjustments. Secondly, the instruments are presented and discussed in two groups of adolescents (13 and 16 years old) in a secondary school in a low-income neighborhood. The phrasing of the items is adjusted according to their suggestions. Thirdly, the instruments resulting from these adaptations are administered in two secondary schools (one in a low-income neighborhood, one in a middle-income neighborhood) together with the Ryff scale for psychosocial wellbeing which is translated, adapted and validated for use in Argentinean adolescents (culturally equivalent to Uruguayan youth) by Casullo and colleagues (2002). The quantitative data resulting from this screening is used to analyze the questionnaires’ factor structures, Chronbach`s alpha, scale intercorrelations and correlations with psychological wellbeing.
