Summary: This project concerns research into the impact of education and nationality of origin among youth and young adults in the Brussels-Capital Region, where social economic health differences can be observed. Reducing social inequalities in health is one of the top priorities in contemporary health policies. This project aims to increase insights into the impact of education and nationality on inequalities in health and mortality of adolescents and young adults in the Brussels-Capital Region (BCR). The first part of this research focuses on descriptive analyses, in which important differences have been found between young persons in the BCR concerning socio-economic background, nationality of origin and migration history. The second part of this research deepens these findings. Factors positively influencing the health situation of youth, related to and through education, are identified. Therefore, the research focuses both on health-compromising/benefiting behaviour as on cause-specific mortality. The Health Interview Surveys in Belgium are used to provide insight into the health profile of Brussels’ youth. The census linked to death certificates provides information on cause-specific mortality, and makes comparisons between Belgian regions possible. Summary: This study examines the variables that affect Israeli social workers’ recommendations to the courts on non-custodial fathers’ access to their preschool children. Analysis of 151 court reports written by social workers in central Israel shows that they award more limited visiting rights to fathers who are poorly educated, do not meet with them, and are in conflict with their spouses over money and property. The discussion focuses on the social workers’ inadvertent biases against men of a lower socio-economic level and offers practical suggestions for a more professional approach. Titel : Stigma and racial/ethnic HIV disparities: Moving toward resilience. Documenttype: artikel Auteurs: Earnshaw, Valerie A., Auteur ; Bogart, Laura M., Auteur ; Dovidio, John F., Auteur ; Williams, David R., Auteur Uitgegeven: Washington, DC : American Psychological Association Publicatiedatum: 2013 Tijdschrift: American Psychologist Vol. 68, No. 4 Paginering : p. 225-236 Taal : Engels (eng) Trefwoorden: Gezondheid en welzijn:Algemeen
Summary: Prior research suggests that stigma plays a role in racial/ethnic health disparities. However, there is limited understanding about the mechanisms by which stigma contributes to HIV-related disparities in risk, incidence and screening, treatment, and survival and what can be done to reduce the impact of stigma on these disparities. We introduce the Stigma and HIV Disparities Model to describe how societal stigma related to race and ethnicity is associated with racial/ethnic HIV disparities via its manifestations at the structural level (e.g., residential segregation) as well as the individual level among perceivers (e.g., discrimination) and targets (e.g., internalized stigma). We then review evidence of these associations. Because racial/ethnic minorities at risk of and living with HIV often possess multiple stigmas (e.g., HIV-positive, substance use), we adopt an intersectionality framework and conceptualize interdependence among co-occurring stigmas. Strengthening economic and community empowerment and trust at the structural level, creating common ingroup identities and promoting contact with people living with HIV among perceivers at the individual level, and enhancing social support can improve resilience to societal stigma and ultimately reduce racial/ethnic HIV disparities. Titel : The Principle of Non-Discrimination in the Convention on the Rights of the Child Documenttype: artikel Auteurs: Besson, Samantha, Auteur Uitgegeven: Leiden [Netherlands] : Martinus Nijhoff Publishers Publicatiedatum: 2005 Tijdschrift: The International Journal of Children’s Rights, ISSN 0927-5568 Vol. 13, No. 4 Paginering : 433-461 Taal : Engels (eng) Trefwoorden: Kinderen in kwetsbare situaties:Algemeen
Summary: Article 2 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child guarantees the principle of non-discrimination of the child. However, special protective measures can have destructive discriminatory consequences, especially on vulnerable children whose integration should be one of the most important goals. New inclusive approaches are needed, as to avoid ghettoization in some cases of child discrimination. Titel : Transnationale adoptie en diversiteit. Over wortels en rugzakken. Documenttype: artikel Auteurs: De Graeve, Katrien, Auteur Uitgegeven: Brussel : VZW Pluralistisch Overleg Welzijnswerk Publicatiedatum: 2014 Tijdschrift: Alert Vol. 40, Nr. 2 Paginering : 64-69 Taal : Nederlands (dut) Trefwoorden: Gezin:Adoptie
Summary: Flemish MP Liesbeth Homans (N-VA) called racism a relative term that is mainly used as an excuse for personal failure (Bultinck & Faes, 2013). With this position she is certainly not alone. Many see their own achievements as the result of personal talents and eagerness to work. If others are less fortunate, this is perceived as personal failure. The central idea in this reasoning is the individual development in a society where everyone has the same chances. This is also the context in which adoptive parents and the professionals who support them, are struggling with the differences of transnationally adopted children. Here also, an individualized look prevails, that mainly focuses on the psychology of adoptees. The psychological ability of the adoptee to fit into the adoptive family is central in the preparation and support of adoptive parents. According to this approach, the ability of adoptive children often decreased due to past experiences of loss. Experts advise adhesion therapy and psychological counseling to recover the injured adhesion ability. This almost exclusive focus on the psyche of adoptees threatens to impose the cause of the success or failure of adhesion and 'integration' almost exclusively by the adoptees themselves.
