Samenvatting: Aangezien pleegkinderen weggehaald zijn uit hun oorspronkelijke thuissituatie en naar verschillende soorten verblijven en scholen zijn gegaan, kan men heel wat stress en uitdagingen ervaren. Vaak heeft men dan ook moeite om om te gaan met extreme emotionele turbulentie. De ervaring van trauma en instabiliteit kan op zijn beurt gevolgen hebben voor het academische parcours van pleegkinderen. Het blijkt uitzonderlijk te zijn wanneer pleegkinderen zich inschrijven voor hoger onderwijs. Deze studie onderzoekt de fase waarin de zorg stopt en de jongeren hun opleiding verder zetten aan een academische instelling. Een aantal succesvolle studenten die ervaring hebben met pleegzorg worden ondervraagd. Er wordt gepolst naar de ondersteunende factoren in de pleegzorg die de aanzet gaven om hun opleiding verder te zetten, inclusief hoe de ouders hen steunden, de emotionele steun en stabiliteit. Deze zaken zorgden ervoor dat men de negatieve ervaringen achter zich kon laten. De bereidheid van volwassenen om deze jongeren te helpen en deel uit te maken van hun leven gaf hen de kans om veranderingen op academisch en sociaal-emotioneel vlak mogelijk te maken. Zo werd hun vermogen om na het middelbaar door te zetten en naar de universiteit te gaan aangemoedigd.
Summary: As a result of being removed from their homes and moving between different placements and schools, foster youth can experience high levels of stress and challenges as they struggle to cope with such extreme emotional turbulence. The experience of trauma and instability in turn, can have consequences on foster students' academic progress. As it is seemingly uncommon for foster youth to matriculate to postsecondary education, this study examines how successful foster youth transitioned out of care and furthered their education at an academically rigorous institution. From high-achieving former foster students, this study uncovers their experiences while in out-of-home care that helped them enroll in a university, including how adult supporters provided guidance, emotional support, and stability, which allowed students to move out of their negative past experiences. Adults' willingness to assist youth and be a part of their lives provided students with a transformative academic and social emotional environment, furthering their ability to persist through high school and gain acceptance to a top-tier university.

Samenvatting:	Dit artikel focust op de strategieën die Israëlische ouders van kinderen met hoog functionerende communicatiestoornissen toepassen in hun onderhandelingen met gemeentelijke plaatsingscommissies, om hun recht om volledig betrokken te worden in zaken die het schoolgaan van hun kinderen betreffen te realiseren. Daar de kinderen vanwege hun beperking niet zelf kunnen opkomen voor hun rechten, komt deze taak bij de ouders terecht. Het artikel beweert dat de ouders in de onderhandelingen alternatieven inbrengen voor het professionele discours dat typisch is voor de werkcultuur van het comité. Het alternatieve discours is gebaseerd op het zelfbewustzijn van de ouders over hun cultureel kapitaal en hun begrip van de democratische cultuur, wat hun begrip versterkt van de verplichting van de stedelijke ambtenaren om hen onderwijsfaciliteiten te geven die aansluiten bij hun wereldbeeld. Dit onderzoek maakt een onderscheid tussen formele en informele handelingsstrategieën die ertoe bijdragen om de ouders om te vormen van passieve subjecten die de beslissingen van de comités aanvaarden naar actieve individuen die weerbaarheid tonen.
Summary:	This article focuses on the strategies that Israeli parents of children with high functioning communication disorders apply in their negotiations with municipal placement-committees, in order to realize their right to be fully involved in matters concerning their children’s schooling. The article’s claim is that the parents introduce into the negotiation process alternatives to the professional discourse inherent in the committee’s working culture. The alternative discourse rests on the self-awareness of the parents to their cultural capital and their understanding of a democratic culture, which reinforces their perception of city officials’ duties to grant them educational services which accord with their world view. This study distinguishes between formal and informal strategies of action that assist the parents turning from passive subjects who accept the committee’s decisions into active individuals who establish a culture of resistance.
