Ongeveer twintig procent van de Vlaamse jongeren krijgt te maken met een depressie tijdens de adolescentie. Uit onderzoek blijkt bovendien dat jongeren in de Bijzondere Jeugdzorg bijzonder kwetsbaar zijn om een depressie en suïcidale ideatie te ontwikkelen. Het zoeken naar adequate depressiebehandelingen is aldus een belangrijke onderzoeksdoelstelling met grote maatschappelijke relevantie. Gehechtheidsonderzoek stelt dat de kwaliteit van de ouder-kindrelatie een belangrijke rol speelt, hetzij als buffer hetzij als risicofactor, voor het ontwikkelen en/of in stand houden van gedrags- en emotionele problemen. Attachment Based Family Therapy (ABFT; ontwikkeld in Philadelphia, USA) is een kortdurende, taakgestuurde gezinstherapie die tot doel heeft breuken in de gehechtheidsrelatie en het vertrouwen tussen ouder(s) en de depressieve adolescent te herstellen. Amerikaanse effectstudies (RCT-design) tonen aan dat deze relationele benadering met de kwaliteit van de ouder-kindrelatie als behandelfocus zeer effectief is in de behandeling van depressie en suïcidaliteit bij adolescenten. Daarom onderzoekt deze studie: (1) of de veelbelovende effecten van ABFT in de USA (United States of America - Verenigde Staten) ook in de Vlaamse context repliceerbaar zijn (effectiviteit); (2) op welke wijze ABFT een plaats kan hebben binnen het bestaande hulpverleningsaanbod van voorzieningen van Bijzondere Jeugdzorg (implementatie); en (3) de ontwikkeling van opleidingsstrategieën om therapeuten te trainen in ABFT (disseminatie). Summary: This project concerns research into the ‘Attachment Based Family Therapy’ (ABFT) in Home Based Services of the Flemish Child Welfare System. Approximately twenty percent of Flemish youngsters are confronted with a depression during adolescence. Furthermore, research shows the vulnerability of these youngsters in the Flemish Child Welfare System to develop a depression or suicide thoughts. The search for adequate means that deal with depression is therefore an important research goal with social relevance. Attachment research argues that the quality of a parent-child relationship forms an important role – either as buffer or as risk factor – for the development and / or maintenance of behavior- and emotional problems. Attachment Based Family Therapy (ABFT; developed in Philadelphia, US) is a short term, task oriented family therapy that aims to restore rifts in the attachment relationship and the trust between parent(s) and the depressive adolescent. American effect studies (RCT design) prove the effectiveness of this relational approach concerning quality of parent-child relationship in the treatment of depression and suicide thoughts among adolescents. This study examines therefore: (1) if the promising effects of ABFT in the USA (United States of America) also apply to the Flemish context (effectiveness); (2) which role the ABFT can play within the current Services of the Child Welfare System (implementation); and (3) the development of education strategies to train therapists in ABFT (dissemination).
