Het Provinciaal Instituut Heynsdaele bestaat uit een woonvoorziening en een school voor speciaal onderwijs voor jongens van 12 tot 21 jaar met gedrags- en emotionele stoornissen. Het doel van dit project was om aan de behoeften van deze doelgroep te beantwoorden met behulp van passende strategieën. In het proces van het project werden de probleemzones van het hele instituut geïdentificeerd door het uitvoeren van interviews, het observeren van klassen en levende groepen, en door het verzamelen van documentatie over de organisatie. Op basis van de verzamelde gegevens werden drie probleemgebieden geïdentificeerd: agressie, illegal drugsgebruik en non-participatie. Om deze problemen aan te pakken, werden twee strategieën toegepast. De eerste, de Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI), is een therapeutische en verbale strategie gebruikt om in te grijpen wanneer de kinderen zich in een crisis bevinden. De andere, een gelijkaardig system, was bedoeld om grenzen te stellen aan ernstig storend gedrag, positief gedrag op verschillende niveaus te belonen en niet-reagerende leerlingen te identificeren. Ten aanzien van de deelnemers aan dit onderzoek, bleek na een aantal vragenlijsten dat de gedragsproblemen van deze jongeren bleef…
Summary: In 2005, the Province of East-Flanders (Belgium) approved the project ‘Heynsdaele’. The Provincial Institute Heynsdaele consists of a residential facility and a school for special education for boys aged 12 to 21 with emotional and behavioural disorders (EBD). It was the goal of this project to meet the needs of this target group by using appropriate strategies). In the process of the project the problem areas of the whole institute were identified, by performing interviews, observing classes and living groups, and by collecting documentation on the organization. Based on the data collected, three problem areas were identified: aggression, illicit drug abuse and non-attendance. In order to address these problem areas, two strategies were implemented. The first, Life Space Crisis Intervention (LSCI), is a therapeutic and verbal strategy used to intervene when children are in crisis. The other, a level system, was meant to set limits to severe disruptive behaviour, to reward positive behaviour in different levels and to identify non-responsive students. Het heeft zijn wortels in het werk van Aichorn, Redl, Wineman en Bettelheim, en is onderdeel van de omgevingstherapeutische traditie. In 2000 werd LSCI geïntroduceerd in het orthopedagogisch observatie- en behandelingscentrum, een school en dag-eenheid voor 60 kinderen met gedrags- en emotionele stoornissen verbonden aan de Vakgroep Orthopedagogiek van de Universiteit Gent (België). De bijzondere positie van de oriëntatie gericht op 'therapeutische omgevingen' in de geschiedenis van de afdeling heeft de integratie van de LSCI aangemoedigd in de dagelijkse activiteiten van de afdelingen van de school (Broekaert et al, Int J Ther Gemeenschappen 30 (2):. 122-145, 2009) . In 2003 werd LSCI geïmplementeerd en bestudeerd in verschillende Vlaamse instituten. Positieve effecten op schoolresultaten, aanwezigheid in de klas en het aantal conflicten werden aangetoond. In dit artikel worden de reflecties van de verzorgers opgenomen. Analyses van deze reflecties resulteerden in 4 grote thema's: de inhoud van de functie en taken, de jongeren in het centrum, het werken met de jeugd in het centrum, en de samenwerking met collega's en andere teams. De resultaten van deze analyse worden besproken. Summary: Life space crisis intervention (LSCI) is a therapeutic and verbal strategy used to intervene when children are in crisis. It has its roots in the work of Aichorn, Redl, Wineman and Bettelheim, and is part of the milieu-therapeutic tradition. In 2000, LSCI was introduced at the Orthopedagogical Observation and Treatment Centre, a school and day unit for 60 children with emotional and behavioural disorders affiliated with the Department of Orthopedagogy at Ghent University (Belgium). The particular position of orientation towards 'therapeutic environments' in the department's history has encouraged the integration of LSCI in the daily activities of the departments' school (Broekaert et al., Int J Ther Communities 30(2):122-145, 2009). In 2003, LSCI was implemented and studied in several Flemish Institutes. Positive effects were found on school results, attendance in the classroom and number of conflicts. In this article, the reflections of the caretakers are taken into account. Analyses of these reflections resulted in 4 major themes: content of job and tasks, the youth in the centre, working with the youth in the centre, and cooperation with colleagues and other teams.
