Dit project betreft onderzoek naar totale genoomanalyse. De implementatie van totale genoomanalyse zal een grote impact hebben op het veld van de humane genetica en het domein van de geneeskunde in het algemeen. De implementatie van deze technologie genereert mogelijke uitdagingen voor de huidige denkkaders met betrekking tot het genetisch testen van minderjarigen. In het bijzonder biedt het uitdagingen voor verschillende thema’s zoals het recht van ouders op de genetische informatie van hun kinderen, de belangen van minderjarigen, het recht om (niet) te weten, privacyrechten, geïnformeerde toestemming, genetische ‘counselling’ en de plicht om patiënten op langere termijn op te volgen. De algemene doelstelling van dit onderzoeksproject is om de ethische en juridische aspecten te onderzoeken met betrekking tot de implementatie van totale genoomanalyse in de context van minderjarigen. De resultaten van een juridische analyse, een kwalitatief empirisch onderzoek en een normatief ethische analyse ondersteunen de ontwikkeling van beleidsoriëntaties met betrekking tot de implementatie van totale genoomanalyse in verschillende domeinen, gaande van de klinische context, de onderzoekscontext, neonatale ‘screening’ en ‘direct-to-consumer genetic testing’. Twee meetings worden georganiseerd om de bevindingen te bespreken en beleidsoriëntaties af te toetsen. |
| Summary: |
This project concerns research into whole genome sequencing. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) is forecast to have a significant impact on the field of human genetics in the near future. The sheer volume of information generated by WGS promises to challenge the policies surrounding genetic testing of children, as it raises several issues, including: the rights of parents to access their child’s genetic information, the best interests of children, the right (not) to know, privacy rights, the clinical utility of retrieved information, the level of consent, the duty to re-contact by healthcare professionals, and counseling issues. The general objective is to analyze the ethical and legal aspects with regard to the implementation of WGS for minors. This research project is based on a strategy of triangulation in which various types of information are analyzed (legal documents, normative documents and ethical and legal academic literature, as well data collection resulting from qualitative interviews). Our results will inform the development of policy orientations with regard to the implementation of WGS in children in the research and in the clinic, as well as in the context of direct-to-consumer companies and neonatal screening. Two stakeholders meetings are proposed to orient agreement on key recommendations. |
