Summary: This project concerns research into the perinatal support to disadvantaged families. More specifically, this study explores existing perinatal care in Flanders and examines its opportunities and obstacles to offer optimal support to all pregnant and young families. Through literature- and document analysis, through an online survey among a broad range of perinatal caregivers, social workers and volunteers, through three visits throughout Europe and through further exploration of the findings by means of in-depth qualitative research, significant leverage opportunities and key actions are put forward. Structural compound of social and medical care, subsequent connection of prenatal care with child care and active attention to diversity are major issues to implement. This study makes these ideas concrete based on suggestions from caregivers and good practices from abroad.
Summary: How do children experience the relation between school and family, and how do they co-construct it? Through focus group interviews with 12 children from two diverse school contexts (a rural and a metropolitan elementary school), this relationship was discussed. The results show that children are active gatekeepers in this relationship. They view their school and their home both as important but distinct contexts. They influence this relationship, a.o. by being selective in the information they pass on. It is through this mediation that children mainly realize their agency; not only in what they do, but also in the considerations they make. Titel : Practising kinship care: Children as language brokers in migrant families Documenttype: artikel Auteurs: Bauer, Elaine, Auteur Uitgave: Vol. 23 Uitgegeven: Thousand Oaks [USA] : SAGE Publications Publicatiedatum: 2016 Tijdschrift: Childhood Paginering : p. 22–36 Taal : Engels (eng) Trefwoorden: Gezin:Algemeen
Kinderen in kwetsbare situaties:Migratie:Algemeen
Summary: Language brokering is an activity whereby children interpret and translate for their migrant parents who have not yet learned the language of the new country. The majority of the studies have been conducted among children and adolescents, primarily exploring the psychological and emotional impact on the child and the development of the parent–child relationship resulting from the activity. These studies report mixed results ranging from negative to positive outcomes. Largely unexplored, however, is the practical contributions children make to their families and to their communities in their activities as language brokers. This article uses data from a UK Economic and Social Research Council Professorial Fellowship programme of work entitled ‘Transforming experiences: Re-conceptualising identities and “non-normative” childhoods’ to explore the retrospective childhood experiences of adults from migrant families who have grown up interpreting and translating for their parents in sometimes complex and sensitive situations where adults are usually in control. It examines some of the consequences of the activity in terms of the benefits and drawbacks. It also highlights how from both practical and cultural perspectives, child language and cultural brokering could be understood as one of the many ways that children of migrants contribute to the settlement and functioning of their families, and in the process, practice and learn about kinship care at an early age. Thus, although there may be some limitations to the activity, there are also significant benefits. Pro-M staat voor ‘promoting early multilingualism in childhood and childcare’. Summary: Various organizations operating in child care and family support, serve more and more multilingual families. Therefore a lot of enthousiasm is seen for this topic. Those organizations took initiative to ask universities for help in order to get to know the needs of professionals concerning the team of multilingual development. This is how the Pro-M Project was founded as a cooperation between three universities (University of Leuven, Ghent University and Free University of Brussels) and three social actors (the agency Kind and Gezin, VBJK and Iedereen Leest). The Pro-M project focuses on how professionals and parents of children that are raised multilingually cooperate today. Starting from this information, we can develop tools for childcare and family support organizations to further optimize the cooperation. Pro-M stands for ‘promoting early multilingualism in childhood and childcare’. More than 20 organizations have engaged themselves to sustainably implement the results of the Pro-M project.
