Summary: This qualitative research explores the unknown phenomenon of ‘self-discrimination’ of immigrant youngsters on the Belgian labor market. 'Self-discrimination' is a psycho-social process through which individuals try to protect their identity in a threatening or unsafe environment because others approach them with negative stereotypes. A better term is ‘the internalization of discrimination'. CeMIS-UA conducts research about this phenomenon in Flanders. These results are integrated with the results of Brussels and Wallonia. Summary: This project aims to analyse how intersectionality in itself is a factor in the accumulation of disadvantages leading to an increase in inequality, allowing for the design of policies tackling these intersections. In this, the project contributes to the development of methodological approaches to study intersectionality and to translate them into concrete policies. More precisely the project will study the accumulation of disadvantages over the life course among young adults, analysing the impact of different intersections. The interest of this project therefore also consists in the focus on young adulthood, a blind spot in research which mostly focuses on children or on (poor) families. The project questions to what extent and how social categories intersect and lead to accumulating advantages or disadvantages. Social categories include gender, ethnicity and class in a first instance, and disability and sexuality in a second instance. Advantages and disadvantages will be studied on the level on the highest educational degree and the timing of graduation, the first job and the transition of leaving home, and, if possible, other factors such as state of health and income. The quantitative analyses will be based on the Belgian dataset of the Generations and Gender Survey (GGS). The GGS is a panel survey of nationally representative samples of 18-79 year-old population throughout Europe. Belgium has now realized the first wave of at least three panel waves with a representative subsample of the Flemish population. Given the low number of respondents with a form of disability or from a sexual minority group (LGBT), a qualitative research phase will be added in which semi-structured in-depth interviews are conducted in order to supplement the quantitative analyses with information on the intersection of the different social categories at play. Titel : Jeugdwerk en sociale uitsluiting. De toegankelijkheidsdiscussie voorbij? Documenttype: onderzoek Auteurs: Van de Walle, Tineke, Onderzoeker ; Maria Bouverne-De Bie, Promotor Taal : Nederlands (dut) Trefwoorden: Kinderen in kwetsbare situaties:Armoede

Summary: The discussion in Flanders about youth work and social exclusion is mainly a discussion about the non-participation of certain youth groups. Young people in poverty and immigrant youth are considered to be underrepresented in our (mainstream) youth work arrangements. As a consequence, policymakers have been investing heavily in making youth work initiatives more accessible for these groups. Reproduction of social gaps within the field of youth work nonetheless remains. In addition, the preoccupation with the inclusion of young people in existing institutional structures generates negative outcomes. We can refer to a phenomenon that has been named a ‘pistachio-effect’: in focussing on turning young people into rule-abiding participants, we give up on those young people who are too difficult to include. This Ph.D. dissertation contributes to this discussion in two ways. Firstly, a review of studies on positive effects challenges the idea that increased youth work participation of low SES groups is an adequate priority in the battle against marginalisation. Empirical studies confirm positive effects on youth work participants, but they do not support the conviction that current non-participants will benefit from participation in the same arrangements. Secondly, an empirical (case) study is presented that started from the premise that not ‘inclusion in existing arrangements’, but ‘supporting the actual social participation of young people’ should be the priority of youth work/policy. We discovered in a city-neighbourhood that youth work initiatives (will) inevitably come short in reaching and mixing (certain socially excluded) youth groups. However, we also found that youth workers often succeed in opening up the boundaries of their initiatives (especially when they go beyond their custom practices); that youth work initiatives do different things for different young people; and subsequently, do things that go beyond the provision of leisure activities (e.g. providing assistance) – although they experience a lot of powerlessness in this field. The conclusion of this dissertation is that we should above all be concerned with what concrete pedagogical practices mean for socially marginalised young people, and that the discussion on youth (work) and social exclusion should not be confined to the youth work sector. Summary: The Knowledge Center Higher Institute for Family Sciences (Odisee) recently conducted an exploratory research on the opinions of youngsters on youth friendly housing environment. The results are rendered in this article, which describes how youngsters (14-21 year olds) would like to design public space. Using the concept of a “youth friendly housing environment”, the young respondents rated different items, setting priorities. This showed that the primary issue for youngsters is an environment in which they can move through. This launches the discussion on youth in public spaces, which often merely focuses on youngsters hanging around and causing hassle. The results of the survey were subsequently compared to the same items, scored by their parents in previous research. Within the group of respondents (N = 100), a group of Jewish Orthodox girls was included. The answers were compared to the overall results and showed to be mostly the same. However, there were some differences and these are explored in more detail. Vaste link: http://www.kekidatabank.be/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=3279 Elektronische documenten
