| Summary: |
This doctoral study is part of a European project aiming to develop an intervention to prevent obesity in 10- to 12-year-old children. A first study investigates the level of objectively measured physical activity and sedentary time in European children. The result of this study shows that very few children achieve the recommendation of 60 minutes moderate to vigorous physical activity a day. Furthermore, it becomes apparent that these children spend on average more than eight hours a day in a sedentary way. A second study concludes that television time, computer use and total screen-time do not adequately reflect the total sedentary time of European children. In a third part of this research, we find statistical relations between the physical activity and sedentary behaviour of 10- to 12-year-olds on the one hand and parental behaviour, performing healthy behaviour with the child, parental rules and restrictions, parenting styles and practices on the other hand. A final study examines the effect of an intervention to reduce sedentary time. This examination concludes that the UP4FUN intervention has no significant effect on both sedentary time and physical activity of the children. This is possibly due to the short intervention period. |
