Hoofdstuk uit het boek 'Verslagen van het centrum voor Genderstudies : U Gent 21'.
Seksualiteit is een integraal deel van de ontwikkeling als adolescent. Echter, in het publieke debat is er rondom tienerseksualiteit - met name de seksualiteit van meisjes – vaak sprake van een morele paniek. Niet zelden worden hierbij ‘de media’ als schuldigen aangewezen. Ander onderzoek liet zien dat meisjes met een specifieke etnische of religieuze achtergrond meer seksueel risicogedrag vertonen. Hierbij wordt echter niet ingegaan op verklaringen voor dit fenomeen. Bovendien is in Vlaanderen onderzoek naar seksualiteitsbeleving bij allochtone jongeren schaars, helemaal in combinatie met gemediatiseerde representaties van seksualiteit en identiteitsvorming. Op basis van focusgroepen met in totaal 36 allochtone jongens en meisjes (14-19 jaar) peilt de auteur naar hun betekenisgeving aan gender en seksualiteit op televisie en in het alledaagse leven. De groepen bestonden uitsluiten uit of jongens of meisjes. In de resultatensectie worden verschillende thema’s belicht, zoals definities van seksueel getinte beelden, seks als gespreksthema onder elkaar, maagdelijkheid en eer. Tevens wordt er aandacht besteedt aan genderrollen: wie moet volgens de jongeren ‘de eerste stap’ zetten, is er sprake van een dubbele standaard etc. Met betrekking tot homoseksualiteit en heteronormativiteit stelt de auteur vast dat in alle focusgroepen een heteronormatief discours heerst. Ze concludeert dat de jongeren relatief tolerant staan tegenover homoseksualiteit als identiteit, maar niet ten opzichte van de seksuele praktijk die ermee wordt geassocieerd. Een kanttekening hierbij is de sociale context waarbinnen de uitspraken werden gedaan: individuele gesprekken zouden wellicht een ander resultaat hebben opgeleverd. Tot slot wordt vastgesteld dat het maagdelijkheiddiscours een cruciaal concept is in het referentiekader omtrent seksualiteit bij de meeste allochtone jongeren. |

Sexuality is an important part in the development of an adolescent. However, in the public debate there is often a moral panic when it comes to teen sexuality - especially the sexuality of girls. Not infrequently, 'the media' is being identified as guilty. Another study showed that girls with a specific ethnic or religious background have more sexual risk behavior. This article however, does not discuss explanations for this phenomenon. Moreover, in Flanders research on sexuality among immigrant youths is in short supply, especially in combination with mediated representations of sexuality and identity. Based on focus groups with a total of 36 ethnic minority boys and girls (14-19 years), the author assesses to their interpretations of gender and sexuality on television and in the everyday life. The groups were excluded from either boys or girls. In the results section various topics are discussed, such as definitions of sexual images, sex as a topic of conversation among themselves, virginity and honor. Attention is also paid to gender roles: who should according to Youth, set "the first step", is there a double standard etc. With regard to homosexuality and heteronormativity the author notes that in all focus groups a heteronormative discourse dominated. She concludes that young people are relatively tolerant towards homosexuality as an identity but not in relation to the sexual practice that is associated with it. A side note here is the social context in which the statements were made: individual interviews would probably have yielded a different result. Finally, it is established that the virginity discourse is a crucial concept in the frame of reference about sexuality among most immigrant youth. |
