In dit artikel bespreken de auteurs de voorlopige resultaten van een Belgisch onderzoek over 210 jonge daders die in 1999, 2000 en 2001 uit handen gegeven werden in het volwassenstrafrecht. De lange termijn gerechtelijke procedures die deze jongeren, nu tussen de 30 en 40 jaar oud, ondergingen, worden onderzocht. Voortgaand op de strafregisters en detentie-records van de steekproef, worden gerechtelijke wegen naar volwassenheid getoetst. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat het grootste deel van de populatie nog steeds betrokken is bij het strafrechtstelsel. Meer dan 50 procent is op een bepaald moment in de laatste 3 jaar veroordeeld, en bijna een derde van de steekproef is gevangen genomen. Met dit vrij ongunstige beeld van de toekomst van uit handen gegeven jonge daders, hopen we de discussie over uithandengeving in België opnieuw te openen. |

In this article, the authors discuss the preliminary results of a Belgian research on 210 young offenders transferred to Adult Court in 1999, 2000 and 2001. The long-term judicial pathways of these youngsters, now aged between 30 and 40, are explored. Drawing on the criminal records and detention records of the sample, judicial pathways into adulthood are charted. The results show that the greater part of the sample is still involved in the criminal justice system. More than 50 per cent were convicted at some point in the last 3 years, and almost a third of the population is imprisoned. With this quite unfavourable picture of transferred offenders’ future pathways, we hope to reopen the discussion about transfer policies in Belgium. |
