Het jeugdwerk boert achteruit, overal ter wereld, maar niet in Vlaanderen. Er is een vrij algemeen geloof in de kracht van jeugdwerk. Toch is het probleem waarrond de jeugdwerkdiscussie draait niet anders in Vlaanderen dan in andere Europese landen: het jeugdwerk bereikt niet iedereen. Het jeugdwerk bereikt vooral die groep niet, di er het meeste nood aan lijkt te hebben.
In dit boek wordt over de landsgrenzen heen gekeken, maar vooral ook naar het verleden. Het selectieve bereik van het jeugdwerk was immers van bij het begin een groot probleem. In die mate zelfs dat deze vaststelling aan de basis ligt van ons rijke en gediversifieerde jeugdwerklandschap. Een differentiatie die er mee voor zorgt dat de kerntaak van jeugdwerk lijkt te vervagen. Wat is jeugdwerk? Het antwoord op die vraag wordt te vaak beperkt tot een methodisch of uitkomstgericht kader. Toch zijn er funderende concepten die, vaak impliciet, doorheen alle ontwikkelingen en vernieuwingen inherent verbonden blijven aan het jeugdwerk. De auteur gaat op zoek naar deze grondconcepten van het jeugdwerk. Hij komt tot de conclusie dat ze de stabiliteit uitmaken van jeugdwerk. Tegelijk lijken ze een verruimend perspectief te belemmeren, waardoor de jeugdwerkdiscussie al honderd jaar lang in haar eigen staart bijt. De auteur houdt een pleidooi voor verruimend onderzoek in en met de jeugdwerkpraktijk. In het tweede deel van dit boek wordt daar concreet werk van gemaakt. |

Youth work knows a fallback, all over the world, but not in Flanders. There is a faith, quite generally, in the power of youth work. Still, the centre of the discussion about youth work in Flanders does not differ from that in other European countries: youth work does not reach everybody. Above all, it fails to reach the exact group that seems to need it the most. This book looks across borders, but also mainly to the past. The selective reach of youth work has, after all, been a major problem from the beginning. This to such an extent that this determination forms the basis for our rich and diversified scenery in youth work. A differentiation that seems to contribute to the fading of the core task of youth work. What is youth work? The answer to this question is too often confined to a methodological or an outcome-oriented frame. Still, there are founding concepts that, often in an implicit way, stay connected inherently to youth work, throughout all developments and renewals. The author researches these founding principles of youth work. He concludes that they constitute the stability of youth work. At the same time, they seem to hinder a broadening perspective, causing the youth work to chase its own tail. The author pleads for broadening research about the practice of youth work, as well as broadening research in cooperation with it. The second section of this book holds a practical application hereof. |
