Samenvatting: In Deel I voorziet het Verdrag tegen foltering 16 substantiële bepalingen. Deel II richt het Comité op en Deel III bevat een aantal algemene bepalingen. Het Verdrag is zowel op kinderen als op volwassenen van toepassing, maar kinderen worden niet specifiek vermeld. Het CAT heeft een periodieke rapportageprocedure, een navraagprocedure, een interstatelijke klachtenprocedure en een individuele klachtenprocedure. Het Aanvullend Protocol, dat in juni 2006 in werking trad, creëert het sub-Comité inzake de preventie van foltering (SPT), wiens mandaat het is om plaatsen te bezoeken waar mensen die van hun vrijheid beroofd werden, worden vastgehouden.
Summary: In its Part I, the Convention against Torture provides 16 substantial provisions; in Part II it establishes the Committee; and Part III contains general provisions. The Convention applies to children and adults alike, but children are not mentioned specifically. CAT has a periodical reporting procedure, an inquiry procedure, an inter-state complaints procedure and an individual complaints procedure. The Optional Protocol to the Convention, which entered into force in June 2006, creates the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT), which has a mandate to visit places where persons are deprived of their liberty in the States parties.

Samenvatting:	Met zijn preambule en 30 artikelen definieert het Verdrag inzake de uitbanning van alle vormen van discriminatie van vrouwen wat discriminatie van vrouwen precies is, en stelt het een nationale agenda op om zulke vormen van discriminatie te beëindigen. Het Verdrag is zowel op volwassenen als op kinderen van toepassing. Kinderen worden echter ook specifiek vermeld in artikel 5(b) (gelijke rol van mannen en vrouwen in de opvoeding en ontwikkeling van hun kinderen), artikel 9§2 (gelijk recht van mannen en vrouwen inzake de nationaliteit van hun kinderen), en in artikel 16 (gelijke rechten en verantwoordelijkheden van ouders). Het CEDAW heeft een periodieke rapportageprocedure en een communicatie-procedure.
Summary:	Consisting of a preamble and 30 articles, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women defines what constitutes discrimination against women and sets up an agenda for national action to end such discrimination. The Covenant applies to children and adults alike. Specific reference to children is however also made in Article 5(b) (equal role of men and women in children’s upbringing and development), Article 9§2 (equal right of men and women regarding the nationality of their children), and Article 16 (equal rights and responsibilities of parents). CEDAW has a periodical reporting procedure and a communications procedure.

Samenvatting:	Het Verdrag inzake de rechten van personen met een handicap, vervolledigd met een individuele klachtenprocedure door het Aanvullend Protocol, is het eerste omvattende mensenrechteninstrument van de 21e eeuw, alsook het eerste internationale mensenrechtenverdrag dat ook open is voor ondertekening door regionale organisaties. Het Verdrag draagt ertoe bij dat mensen met een handicap niet langer gezien worden als “objecten” van liefdadigheid, medische behandeling en sociale bescherming. In plaats daarvan geeft het gehandicapten de status van mensenrechten-subjecten, die hun eigen rechten kunnen afdwingen en beslissingen voor hun leven kunnen nemen op basis van een vrije en geïnformeerde toestemming. Mensen met een handicap worden gezien als actieve leden van de samenleving die alle categorieën van mensenrechten en fundamentele vrijheden moeten genieten en effectief moeten kunnen uitvoeren. Artikel 7 bevat expliciet enkele rechten van kinderen met een handicap.
Summary:	The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, supplemented by its Optional Protocol, is the first comprehensive human rights treaty of the 21st century and is the first human rights convention that is open for signature by regional organisations. The Convention contributes to the tendency to no longer see persons with disabilities as "objects” of charity, medical treatment and social protection. Instead, it gives them the status of "subjects" with rights, who are capable of claiming those rights and making decisions for their lives based on their free and informed consent. People with disabilities are seen as active members of society who must enjoy and effectively exercise all categories of human rights and fundamental freedoms. Article 7 contains some rights of children with disabilities. The Convention also has an individual communications procedure.

Samenvatting:	Het Verdrag inzake de Rechten van het Kind is het meest comprehensieve instrument rond kinderrechten op internationaal niveau. Vernieuwend is dat het Kinderrechtenverdrag zowel burgerlijke en politieke rechten, als economische, sociale en culturele rechten waarborgt. Door deze verschillende soorten rechten samen te brengen in één instrument, wordt het gelijkwaardige belang en de samenhang van deze rechten benadrukt. Er is wel een differentiatie in de verplichtingen inzake implementatie: ten aanzien van economische, sociale en culturele rechten zijn de staten die partij zijn enkel verplicht die maatregelen te nemen die de hun ter beschikking staande middelen toelaten (art. 4). Een andere nieuw aspect is de idee van participatie: kinderen hebben, naast titularis te zijn van beschermings- en provisierechten, evenzeer het recht om zelf (actief) bij te dragen aan de vormgeving van hun eigen leefwereld/leefomgeving. Het Comité voor de Rechten van het Kind heeft vier algemene beginselen uit het verdrag gedistilleerd: het verbod van discriminatie (art. 2), het belang van het kind (art. 3), het recht op leven, overleven en ontwikkeling (art. 6) en het recht van het kind om zijn mening te uiten (art. 12).
Summary:	The Convention on the Rights of the Child is the most comprehensive instrument on children’s rights on an international level. It is innovative in its approach, incorporating both civil and political rights and economic, social and cultural rights. The combination of these two types of rights into one instrument highlights their indivisibility, interdependence, and the non-hierarchical relationship that exists between them. There is however a difference with regards to the obligations they entail for implementation: with regard to economic, social and cultural rights, State parties need to undertake implementation measures to the maximum extent of their available resources and, where needed, within the framework of international co-operation (Article 4). Another innovative aspect is the idea of participation: next to rights related to protection and the provision of services, children have the right to (actively) participate in shaping their own world and environment. The Committee on the Rights of the Child has identified four basic principles underpinning the Convention in its entirety: non-discrimination (Article 2), the best interests of the child (Article 3), the right to life, survival and development (Article 6) and the right to have one’s views heard and taken seriously (Article 12).
