Titel : Children and media literacy: A research on the potentials of a 'new' audiovisual language. Summary: This project concerns research into the relation between children and media literacy. This research focuses on the media literacy project Aifoon and stresses the potential skills children could learn from this kind of media programs. Using an ethnographic method of a partly participatory field research, this project questions the potentiality of a media literacy program and evaluates the specific case of Aifoon. In this research media literacy is critically questioned using empirical quantitative data to reflect on the specific case but also to question the current theories on media literacy in relation to children and empowerment.
Summary: This article describes the results of an ethnographic study of the media arts project ‘Traject’. The main question was: What role can audiovisual material play in the construction of 'new' language for young people? The project 'Traject' focuses on the audio and visual world of children and make them familiar with audiovisual resources by themselves by making audiovisual stories and translate them into its daily situation. It was examined how children used a new language through the introduction with audiovisual media and how they use their knowledge of these media. This research was presented at the Conference of Research in Cultural Education in June 2007 in Utrecht. Summary: This article examines the use of media in the construction of a “new” language for children. We studied how children acquire and use media literacy skills through their engagement in an educational art project. This media literacy project is rooted in the realm of audiovisual media, within which children’s sound and visual worlds are the focus of inquiry. Using an ethnographic approach, we examined the engagement in the project of participating children, and we analyzed how they used this “new” discourse as a tool to express themselves. Our analysis focused on how the project was received by children, and on the potential for educational media art projects to stimulate media knowledge.

Titel : On Mute, Diaspora Youth. Summary: This doctorate concerns research into using, consuming and doing television among diaspora youngsters. The main goal of this dissertation is to examine the use, consumption, and reception by young diaspora audiences of television and how this links up to questions of identity and everyday life. It addresses five broad research questions: (1) How should diaspora identities, diaspora audiences and diaspora media cultures be understood theoretically? (2) How do teenage diaspora audiences use television in terms of access, preferences, spatial and social viewing (television use)? (3) How is television appropriated in the everyday lives of diaspora youth (television consumption)? (4) How do diaspora audiences interpret and negotiate televised representations (television reception)? (5) What role does television play in the construction of identities of diaspora audiences? This doctorate incorporates a mixed-methodology consisting of following methods: explanatory survey, large scale survey (N = 1555), text analysis of the telenovela ‘Sara’ (television program on VTM, Flemish broadcast), focus groups, expert interviews and visual ethnographical methods which contained four creative research stages and lasted about three months. Summary: Children are not considered to be an appropriate audience for news coverage based on their presumed lack of emotional maturity, critical thinking and proper knowledge. This article challenges these views by presenting the opinions of children aged 10–15 who report having watched broadcast news nearly every day. Additionally, the views of adults aged 25–62 are investigated. Children contest to the ways they are being portrayed by the news media and demonstrate their need to be considered as active participants in the public sphere, which is presented by the news media as an exclusive domain for adults.
