Summary: This research project analyzes the relations between equality of opportunity and early childhood care and education, taking Mauritius as case study. Starting from the conceptualization of 'equality of opportunity’ by contemporary philosophy, an interpretative framework is constructed, permitting to critically review arguments in favour of early childhood care and education as greatest and consensual equalizer, notably by international organizations. Moreover, the interpretative framework accounts for possible different interpretations of equality of opportunity, in particular with reference to ‘intergenerationalities’, and how such contrasts can shape redistributive policies in childhood. Equality of opportunity, inter-generational transmission of disadvantage and the role of early childhood interventions are observed in a concrete case study, and studied through quantitative analyses of a longitudinal dataset, the Child Health Project, carried out from 1972 ongoing in Mauritius. A cohort of 1795 children born in 1969, have been assessed in various development outcomes, from IQ to non-cognitive and physical development, school results, work position from childhood to adulthood (now is looking at third generation), with information about background of families and environment where children have grown up. Furthermore, 100 children have been placed, in 1972, in a high level pre-school setting, so enabling to assessing equalizing effects of early childhood care and education policies. Titel : Applied Ethics as a Foundation in Early Childhood Teacher Education: Exploring the Connections and Possibilities Documenttype: artikel Auteurs: Giovacco-Johnson, Tricia, Auteur Uitgegeven: New York : Springer Publicatiedatum: 2011 Tijdschrift: Early Childhood Education Journal Vol. 38, No. 6 Paginering : p. 449-456 Taal : Engels (eng) Trefwoorden: Kindertijd:Vroege kindertijd:Algemeen
Summary: This project explores how one early childhood preparation program integrated applied ethics in introductory coursework. Recognizing that students enter teacher education with well-formed values and beliefs regarding children and teaching, carefully planned learning experience and encounters in real life learning contexts expand their understanding of the complexity of ethical decision-making in early care and education programs. This project documents students’ perspectives toward their role as meaning-makers through the analysis of assignments intended to promote reflection on values. As students engage with course content and gain practical experience, their knowledge and beliefs regarding teaching evolve together demonstrating the power of ethical thinking in enhancing early childhood teacher education. The findings indicate that students draw on their image of children, social justice, and self-awareness in their development of a professional ethical identity. Summary: Investing in early childhood, positive parenting and child rights education makes sense – from both a human, a human development, a human rights, a child rights and an economic perspective. This Child Rights Reader brings together substantial and fascinating texts from many fields and disciplines which illustrate and elaborate this point. Arranged in ten chapters titled according to pertinent child rights principles and concepts, these texts offer view of the enormous progress made in the past decades and years in several fields of human knowledge. In between these texts several news and factual items inform the reader on the huge gap that still exists between what we know and what we do to make this world a better place for children, and thus to promote human development and better protect human rights. Child rights violations are still met with more rhetoric than leadership. But change is on its way.
