Dit boek is de bespreking van een doctoraatsonderzoek naar hoe voormalige kindsoldaten hun transitieproces van het militaire naar het civiele leven ervaren en welke uitdagingen en hulpbronnen zij daarbij ondervinden. Het onderzoek werd uitgevoerd met voormalige kindsoldaten in de noordelijke Oegandese provincie Lira. Het werd opgesplitst in vier delen. De eerste studie heeft tot doel inzicht te verwerven in het profiel van voormalige kindsoldaten in het noorden van Oeganda, gezien de betreffende literatuur aangeeft dat het begrip “kindsoldaat” een grote diversiteit omvat en bovendien contextueel benaderd wordt. De tweede studie poogt een profiel te creëren van het psychosociaal welzijn van Noord-Oegandese voormalige kindsoldaten op langere termijn en te exploreren welke factoren hiermee geassocieerd zijn. In de derde studie wordt een poging ondernomen om te inventariseren wat deze kinderen zelf ervaren als uitdagingen en hulpbronnen in hun transitieproces van de oorlogsvoerende rebellenbeweging naar de door oorlog getroffen samenleving. De vierde en laatste studie tracht de betekenis van de hulpbronnen bloot te leggen, om op die manier te achterhalen waarom deze ervaren hulpbronnen als waardevol worden beschouwd en welke rol deze spelen in het transitieproces. Uit deze studies wordt tot slot een algemene conclusie getrokken.

This book discusses a doctorate study, in which, the transition process of former child soldiers from military to civilian life is explored, as well as the challenges and resources they meet in the process. The research was conducted with former child soldiers in Lira, a province in the north of Uganda. It has been divided into four parts. The first study aims at acquiring insight in the profile of former child soldiers in the north of Uganda, as the relevant literature indicates that the notion of “child soldiers” contains a wide variety and is approached contextually. The second study tries to create a profile of the psycho-social wellbeing of the former child soldiers in the longer run and to explore which factors are associated with this. The third study attempts to list up what these children experience themselves as challenges and resources in their transition process from a rebel movement at war to a society affected by armed conflict. The fourth and final study tries to identify the resources, and by this to find out why these experiences resources are deemed valuable and what role they play in the transition process. A general conclusion is drafted from these four studies.
