Summary: This article addresses the practices of multiculturalism and social justice as they are explored by an early childhood classroom. In response to the school requirement of participation in the Martin Luther King assembly, the children and their teachers seek to create a meaningful contribution reflective of the children’s voices and conceptions of justice and equality. The article examines classroom practices as children and teachers co-construct meaning around multiculturalism in early childhood. Through classroom research and discussion, the children develop their own concepts around these issues, finding meaningful ways to share their knowledge with the larger school community. Summary: The goal of this article is to investigate the actions of Swedish preschool staff when suspecting the maltreatment of children in their domestic environment, and the staff’s further experiences and relations to the family members. A questionnaire was presented in 2005 to the staff of 189 child groups in community preschools, including 3,100 children. A report to Child Protective Agency (CPA) was submitted in 30% of the cases where maltreatment was suspected. The staff’s decisions as well as their working situation, and how they estimated the parents’ benefits from CPA support were deeply affected by their different relations to the families. The staff had their best contact with the children and their most insecure and vulnerable contact with the fathers. In situations with suspected child maltreatment the staff face conflicts of loyalty, mostly based on insecure relations, which could become an impediment to supporting and educating the children. Summary: This paper provides insight into the participatory development process of a self-report questionnaire for adolescents: the Best Interest of the Child Self-report questionnaire (BIC-S). The BIC-S is based on the ‘Best Interest of the Child’ model. This model articulates, in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, 14 childcare conditions promoting the wellbeing and development of young people. The primary intention of the BIC-S is to give young people in care a voice regarding decisions in legal and care areas that impact their future. The development process of the BIC-S consisted of three main phases (exploration, consultation, pilot), containing a total of five different research stages. Adolescents placed in secure residential care, care professionals and university students were involved in the process. We developed a differentiated instrument that enables young people to express their own views on key aspects of their current and future living conditions. The digitized questionnaire is unique in its comprehensiveness, accessibility and attractiveness for young people, and generates an evaluative profile of care conditions from the adolescents themselves. The paper shows how a theoretically sound questionnaire can be constructed to conform to standards set by adolescents themselves. The BIC-S can serve as a productive vehicle for assessment and shared decision-making in the field of youth care – both at the micro level of individual treatment and at the meso level of evaluating group programmes. Further research into its use in practice is recommended. Summary: The effort to measure and monitor children’s well-being and the use of child well-being indicators is not new. However, recent years have brought new and growing attention to the field, and some argue the revival of the children’s social indicators movement. Much of this new activity can be traced back to the 1960s social indicators movement and be accounted for by UNICEF’s State of the World’s Children annual report, as well as other international and national initiatives and projects. The United Nation’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, through its global ratification and its reporting and monitoring mechanism, has also played a major role in increasing interest in the field. This paper presents the history and development of the field, identifies current trends, and predicts where the field is headed. Summary: The Children’s Measurement Framework (CMF) is a new indicator-based tool for monitoring children’s equality and human rights in Britain. The article provides a conceptual and methodological overview of the CMF and presents initial findings against a subset of indicators. We begin by locating the CMF within the growing body of research that uses statistical indicators to monitor child well-being; and by considering the Framework’s conceptual and methodological positioning in the light of the broader themes discussed in the broader literature on child indicators. The theoretical underpinnings of the CMF in Sen's capability approach are next explored. The CMF indicator set, comprising 50 statistical indicators for monitoring children's equality and human rights across 10 critical domains, is described. Finally, illustrations of CMF indicators are provided for the life, health, education and physical security domains drawing on a range of administrative and social survey data sources.
