Ze identificeren zeven prioritaire gebieden om deze in actie om te zetten: vrede, veiligheid en ontwapening; ontwikkeling en uitroeiing van armoede; bescherming van het milieu; mensenrechten, democratie en goed bestuur; het beschermen van de kwetsbaren; in de specifieke behoeften van Afrika voorzien; en het versterken van de Verenigde Naties. De Verklaring bedraagt een nieuw globaal partnerschap om extreme armoede te beperken en een aantal tijdsgebonden doelen – met deadline in 2015 – te stellen, nu bekend als de Millenniumdoelstellingen. Summary: In the 2000 Millennium Declaration, UN member states reaffirm their shared values and principles. They identify seven key areas to translate these into action: peace, security and disarmament; development and poverty eradication; protecting the common environment; human rights, democracy and good governance; protecting the vulnerable; meeting the special needs of Africa; and strengthening the United Nations. The Declaration amounts to a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty and setting out a series of time-bound targets - with a deadline of 2015 - that have become known as the Millennium Development Goals.
